I have been able to successfully send my Hotmail email via SMTP using Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512 running on Windows XP Pro SP3. However, for the same Hotmail account with identical settings I can NOT send email via SMTP using Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1933 running on Windows 2000 SP4  (although I can still receive email OK).

When I attempt to send, I get the following error:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: '*********', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

I get the same problem using Port 25.

Yes, of course, I have followed the standard instrucitons. Can you tell me why it apparently works OK with WinXP/OE6, but not with Win2k/OE6 ?

Please verify where you are using Windows 2000 SP4. Is it in your office using a Company Firewall? Or are you using it in a Home Connection?

Most issues with SMTP usually stems from a blocked port setting. The port setting is usually blocked by either a Firewall or by the ISP. Contact your ISP or IT Support for your company and ask if they are blocking either port 25 or 587 and ask for a different Port to use.

I am definitely running W2K SP4 (that's what I see in the System Properties>General tab). Both computers are running on my home WiFi network - no corporate firewall. If a port is blocked, why would it only be affecting one account on one Win2K computer, and not the same and other accounts on the WinXP computer ? The Win2K is running an almost virgin install - I only performed a clean format-&-install a few days ago, including SP4 and all critical Windows updates.

Sorry for the slow reply. I have sent the settings as an IAF file, which I hope you can use. I have tested this actual file on another computer running XP and a different version of OE, and it works OK, but it will not work on my computer running a virgin install of Win2K (see versions indicated in my original post).

Since you’re only encountering this issue using your computer with Windows 2000, it is possible that your computer’s firewall software is causing the issue. I suggest that you disable your firewall or any security software and verify if the issue will persist.

Please also verify if you’ll encounter the same error message using a different Hotmail account through the Outlook Express of that specific computer.

As far as I can see there is no firewall on this computer - a firewall is not a standard feature of Win2K is it ? I tried another known-good account IAF file, and it also fails to send from this computer. Any other ideas ?

Only Windows Vista and Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) have firewalls built-in and turned on by default. So it is safe to say that there isn't any on your Win2K computer unless it is manually installed.

Anyway, I found an article that may help you troubleshoot this issue. If all else fails, I have to refer you to an Outlook Express Specialist. You can contact one on this site.

 

 

Outlook 6.00.2800 can establish SMTP connection only using port 25.  Outlook 6.00.2900 can use any port (like 587).  If you are using 2800 and isp blocks port 25 you are screwed.
