Dave! That's the answer I was looking for. At least I know that it's not possible. If you are to forward this to the product team, add this to it. "In the first place, OFFLINE contacts should not have the option to send an instant message"

Currently, sending offline messages on Windows Live Hotmail Web Messenger is not available. However, I’ll forward your concern to our Product Team for feature request.

Gee. Thanks. However, there is a part that you seem to have gotten wrong.

1. I can't even type anything if the contact is offline or appears offline. There will be no "bounced" IM's.

2. The question was about "sending" an OIM and not receiving it.

3. So is this an unsupported scenario? I mean sending an OIM from Live Hotmail's newest WebIM?

I've simulated your issue and verified that if your intended recipient is signed in to his/her Hotmail account but not to the Web Messenger, instant messages will bounce back to you. If your recipient is not signed in to Windows Live Hotmail, offline messages will go through. However, if you access your instant messaging through the integrated messenger in Windows Live Hotmail, you will not be notified that you have an offline message. You need to sign in to Windows Live Messenger to retrieve your offline messages.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that this is not a Windows Live Messenger (client) issue as the interface is with the latest web messenger.

Is there anybody other than Jeffry D that who has answers?

I am pretty sure he was clear when he asked the question regarding the windows live hotmail messenger. This means it's in the web interface and does not apply to your generic reply about contacting Windows Live Messenger Support Group. That channel is meant for the actual windows client of the messenger application.

I have found many problems with the new windows live hotmail messenger compared to the previous one which was available at http://messenger.msn.com but has been completely removed and instead the page is now a forwarded link to the windows live hotmail messenger.

On a sidenote, the url you provided in your post does not even work.

And again, I suggest enabling the old web messenger until all issues with the new online windows live interface have been resolved.

Based on the issue that you’ve encountered, I determined that Windows Live Messenger Support Group could best assist you with your concern. You can contact them by referring to the following steps:

1. Visit https://support.live.com/default.aspx .
2. Click Windows Live Messenger link.
3. Select the Windows Live Messenger version you are using.

* For MSN Messenger 7.0 and MSN Messenger 7.5 versions

a. Click on a topic.
b. Then click on the Contact us link.

* For Windows Live Messenger 8.0, Windows Live Messenger 8.1, Windows Live Messenger 2008 and Windows Live Messenger 2009 versions

a. Choose a topic from the list on the left part of the page.
b. Click on the Get more help on the lower right part of the page.
c. Then click on the Get support.

Hi,

Anyways, the link above provides instructions to send IM's to a contact. However, if I select an offline contact, I'm not allowed to send them OIM's. Is this a problem or an unsupported scenario?

It tells me this: "<email address> appears to be offline. E-mail this contact instead"
