I have been using Windows Live Hotmail Plus for awhile now but no longer wish to pay the yearly fee for it. However, I'd like my current Hotmail account to go back to my free account as it used to be as I have had it forever and all my family, friends, etc. uses it. The card I used to use is old so I keep getting these messages:

We are contacting you because we have been unable to charge your credit card for your Windows Live Hotmail Plus service(s) being billed to you through Microsoft Online Services. The following credit card is the current payment method on your billing account:

My question is - can I just let the current Plus period expire and my account will go back to the free account version?  I don't want to let this lapse and have my account cancelled or deleted as I have a lot of messages saved on Hotmail.

Yes, if your subscription expires your account automatically will go back to the free account version.  If you wish to clarify more regarding the cancellation of your subscription, please contact the MSN Billing Team.  You can reach them through the numbers below:
