The characters in a box you’re seeing is a part of account validation. This is also called Human Interface Proof (HIP). It is used to prevent Spam computers from sending unsolicited e-mail to large numbers of recipients. Our human customers prove they are human by answering the jagged character challenge. During different times and based on different situations, you may be asked to answer several jagged character challenges. Once you have done so, the number of jagged character challenges you have to answer will decrease until it rarely occurs.
If you’re having problems with solving the page, please try the troubleshooting steps below:
1. Optimize your Internet browser.
The issue you described happens when you are using the lower version of your preferred browser. I suggest that you upgrade your browser to its latest version.
For instructions on how to download the latest version of your browser, please contact the support team for your browser. I also suggest that you optimize your browser settings.
2. Use the audio version of the HIP challenge.
a. Click the speaker symbol that is next to the scrambled HIP challenge picture. A pop-up window that contains a new text box will appear.
b. Listen to the characters as they are read, and then type the characters that you hear in the new text box.
c. Submit the HIP challenge.
Note: If you have an Internet pop-up blocker, you may have to turn it off temporarily if the pop-up window that contains the new text box does not appear when you click the button to hear the audio HIP challenge.
3. If you are running any firewall software, pop-up blocking software, or antivirus software, we suggest that you add the following domains to the safe list of your respective Internet filtering software:
hotmail.com
msn.com
passport.com
live.com
If you are not sure how to do this, contact the manufacturer of the Internet filtering software that you are using for detailed instructions. If you are using the Microsoft Windows Internet Connection Firewall, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
